Contingency Planning
Research
Contingency planning
research that was conducted by a group of highly respected research
organizations found, in 2001, that there were significant financial
risks to organizations for every hour of
downtime.
Contingency planning
research – How much does each hour of downtime
cost?
The survey was
intended to provide a limited updating on certain elements of
the
original "1996 Cost of
Downtime Research Study" conducted by Contingency Planning Research
(CPR).
The survey questions
were aimed at benchmarking the changes that have occurred in the
business continuity landscape during the five years since the
full
research study was
last conducted. A new full study will be conducted in the
future.
Of those companies
participating in the 2001 Cost of Downtime
Survey:
- 46% said each hour
of downtime would cost their companies up to $50K
- 28% said each hour
would cost between $51K
and $250K
- 18% said each hour
would cost between $251K
and $1M
- 8% said it would
cost their companies more than $1M per
hour
As to the indirect
cost factors most critical to their company's survival, an overwhelming 57% said that
the combination of “Customer Service or Expectations” and
“Competitive Advantage” were most critical.
