Business Continuity
and Disaster Recovery Planning
Business Continuity
and Disaster Recovery Planning should not be done independently of
each other. In today's highly competitive and service oriented
business Environment, organizations are judged on their ability to
continue to operate and provide a service at all times.
Business Continuity
and Disaster Recovery Planning - DRP
We get lots of
questions about where DRP sits in this. Disaster recovery planning
becomes part of the overall ITSCM strategy. Let me use an example of
the difference.
Let’s say there is a
site where there are 2 fuel refineries with a major airport several
miles away. The approach for one of the airstrips comes in over
these refineries, and when is the most likely occurrence of aircraft
failure? Take off and landing!
DRP typically would
focus on the reactive side which is getting the services up in the
agreed timeframe after the disaster (considering the BIA and RA).
Now in ITSCM we also take all this into consideration but there is
more! What if we were to be able to lessen the risk by having the
approach vector changed? Proactive rather than
reactive.
Business Continuity
and Disaster Recovery Planning - ITSCM
ITSCM is concerned
with managing an organization’s ability to continue to provide a
pre-determined and agreed level of IT Services to support the
minimum business requirements following an interruption to the
business.
This may range from an
application or System failure, to a complete loss of the business
premises. As such, ITSCM forms an integral part of the BCM process
to ensure that IT Services and facilities can be
provided.
